HC Deb 21 April 1891 vol 352 c1029
MR. HALDANE (Haddington)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether it is the intention of the Government to propose the Adjournment of the House for the Whitsuntide Recess on a date subsequent to Wednesday, May 13th, on which date the Women's Suffrage Bill stands as First Order of the Day, and to leave that date as a Private Members' day?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. W. H. SMITH,) Strand, Westminster

I received a deputation on this subject yesterday, and I informed them that the Government did not intend to propose the Adjournment of the House till after the 13th of May, that, so far as I could foresee, there would be no necessity for the Government to appropriate the 13th of May, which would therefore remain a Private Members' day, but that I was not in a position to give a definite pledge on the subject.
