HC Deb 08 May 1890 vol 344 c459
MR. STANLEY LEIGHTON (Shropshire, Oswestry)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury if he can inform the House whether the Government intend to bring in a Bill to carry out the recommendations of the Select Committee of the House of Lords in favour of abolishing the present system of nominating High Sheriffs, and substituting therefor the appointment of a paid officer in each county?

* MR. W. H. SMITH

The Committee of the House of Lords recommended that the High Sheriffs be appointed as hitherto, but that the necessary expenses of receiving the Judges should be paid by the Treasury and county conjointly. The Government do not expect themselves to be able to introduce a Bill on the subject this Session, but it is not unlikely that one will be introduced.
