HC Deb 06 March 1890 vol 342 c117
COLONEL BRIDGEMAN (Bolton)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, having regard to the statements he made in the House on the 26th of November and the 17th of December, 1888, it is the intention of the Government to take any steps to relieve the inhabitants of Cyprus from excessive taxation, either by commuting the Tribute to the Porte or by providing a fixed grant in aid?

* MR. GOSCHEN

The Government has never contemplated providing a fixed grant in aid. As regards the question of commuting the Tribute, the difficulties that stood in our way have not yet been removed.
