HC Deb 04 March 1890 vol 341 c1768
MR. CAINE

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India whether the Secretary of State for India is aware that, while admission to the Volunteer Force of India is refused to the inhabitants of that country as such, Indian Christians are permitted to become members of these organisations; and whether, if he finds the facts are as stated above, the Secretary of State will give instructions to the Government of India to remove a disqualification which depends solely upon the profession of a particular religion, and make it possible for any Indians who may desire to do so to join the Volunteer Forces of the country?

SIR J. GORST

No, Mr. Speaker. There is no such exceptions in favour of Christians. All natives of India are alike eligible for admission to Volunteer Corps.
