HC Deb 03 March 1890 vol 341 cc1650-1
MR. MONTAGU

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, can he state the amount received for 1889 on account of the Transfer Stamp of 1s. per cent, on bonds and shares; and whether he is aware that men of business are by no means reconciled to this tax, on account of the trouble and loss of time caused by the stamping?

MR. GOSCHEN

I will take the opportunity of the Budget to make a statement of the amount received in the current financial year on account of the Transfer Stamp. I am aware that some objection was taken to the tax on its introduction. But no recent complaints have been made; and, indeed. I have never heard of any tax which is not attended with complaints from those who have to pay it.
