§ MR. LANE (Cork Co., E.)I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether the Customs officers have taken any steps to detect the importation of adulterated foreign butter; and, if so, at what ports, and with what results?
§ A LORD OF THE TREASURY (Sir H. MAXWELL,) WigtonI understand that no samples of butter have been taken by the Commissioners of Customs for analysis, no specific information having been received by them as to the importation of adulterated butter fraudulently marked. I have, however, brought the question before the Commissioners, and they will be prepared to have samples taken if they have sufficient reason to suppose that adulterated butter is being imported under fraudulent marks.
