HC Deb 07 July 1890 vol 346 cc1032-3

Order read, for resuming Adjourned Debate on Question [21st May], "That the Bill be now read a second time."

Question again proposed.

*(12.9.) THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (Sir W. HART DYKE,) Kent, Dartford

There is no doubt that this Bill, as it stands, presents some very objectionable features; but, at the same time, there is a strong feeling entertained in all parts of the House that a satisfactory arrangement might be arrived at if the Bill were referred to a Select Committee.

(12.10.) MR. CONYBEARE (Cornwall, Camborne)

Do I understand the Government will give time this Session for the passing of the measure after it has been considered by a Select Committee? There are a good many contentious things in the Bill, but I would not object to the Bill being referred to a Select Committee if we are to understand it is not to be pressed this Session.

DR. TANNER (Cork Co., Mid.)

I hope my hem. Friend will not persevere with his opposition, because if the Bill is referred to a Select Committee many of its objectionable features will be eliminated.

Question put, and agreed to.

Bill read a second time, and committed to a Select Committee.
