I beg to ask the Postmaster General whether he can state what quantities of letters were received from and despatched to the Australian Colonies during the year 1889 respectively by the direct sea route at the rate of 4d. per letter, and by the overland route (viâ Brindisi and Naples) at the rate of 6d. per letter?


The answer to my hon. Friend's question is as follows:—Weight of letters viâ Brindisi or Naples, postage 6d. — despatched to Australasia, 59,000 lb.; received from Australasia, 52,000 1b. Weight of letters sent by all sea route, postage 4d.—despatched to Australasia, 3,9001b.; received from Australasia, 3,800 1b.
