HC Deb 21 February 1890 vol 341 cc893-4
MR. W. A. MACDONALD (Queen's County, Ossory)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether it is the intention of the Government to introduce legislation having for its object the amelioration of the condition of the blind and deaf and dumb; and whether such legislation will be in general agreement with the recommendations of the Royal Commission, as embodied in their Report just issued?

MR. W. H. SMITH

The Government do hope to be able to introduce legislation having for its object the amelioration of the condition of the blind, the deaf, and the dumb, and, speaking generally, the proposed legislation will follow the recommendations of the Report of the Royal Commission.

MR. W. A. MACDONALD

Am I to understand from the reply of the right hon. Gentleman that the Government are not in a position to undertake legislation at once?

MR. W. H. SMITH

I cannot add to the answer I have already given. I hope it may be possible to introduce a Bill during the present Session.
