HC Deb 04 December 1890 vol 349 c530
MR. PICKERSGILL (Bethnal Green, S. W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has sanctioned an improved scheme of pay for the Metropolitan Police; and, if so, what are the terms of the scheme?

MR. MATTHEWS

Yes, Sir; I have sanctioned an improved scheme of pay for the Metropolitan Police, but all the details are not finally settled. I shall have no objection to laying the Police Order, in which those details will appear, in due course upon the Table of the House.

MR. HOWARD VINCENT (Sheffield, Central)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has had under consideration the question of the pay and allowances of the Metropolitan Police Force, and particularly the question of lodgings for the married men stationed in the highly rented inner divisions; and if he has come to any decision on the subject?

MR. MATTHEWS

These questions have, during the Recess, been receiving the anxious consideration of myself and the Commissioner. I have already informed the House that I have sanctioned an improvement in the scale of pay, and I have every hope that the arrangements made will remove any ground of complaint that may have existed.
