HC Deb 04 December 1890 vol 349 cc522-3
MR. SAMUEL EVANS (Glamorgan, Mid)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, with regard to his refusal to sanction the appointment of the late Mr. David Evans, of Aberystwyth, to the office of Chief Constable of Police for Cardiganshire, whether there was any correspondence relating to the subject of the appointment between the Court of Quarter Sessions, or any magisterial members of the Joint Standing Committee, and the Home Office; and, if so, whether he will lay it upon the Table of the House?

MR. MATTHEWS

In order to form the best judgment I could in this matter, I saw and corresponded with various persons who appeared likely to be able to afford useful information. But these communications were all of a confidential character, and it would be contrary to precedent and public policy to make them public. I must, therefore, decline to lay upon the Table any correspondence on this subject, or to answer the hon. Member's question more particularly.
