HC Deb 02 December 1890 vol 349 cc343-4
MR. BRADLAUGH (Northampton)

I beg to ask the Secretary, of State for the Home Department whether he has had his attention drawn to the case of Catherine Hardwick at Sleaford, fined £10 or two months' imprisonment for child desertion; and whether, under the circumstances, he can recommend a remission of the fine?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. MATTHEWS, Birmingham, E.)

My attention has been drawn to this case by the question of the hon. Member. I have communicated with the Magistrates, and can assure the hon. Member that I will give my best consideration to the matter, and let him know the conclusion I arrive at.

MR. BRADLAUGH

As the woman is in custody, and it may take a considerable time before a decision is arrived at, is it not desirable to release her until the settlement is come to?

MR. MATTHEWS

There will be no delay. I hope to be able to arrive at a conclusion to-morrow.
