HC Deb 12 August 1890 vol 348 cc697-8
MR. BRADLAUGH(on behalf of Mr. GOURLEY) (Northampton)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty whether France, Italy, Russia, and other Continental nations, are prepared with shells of large capacity already charged with high explosives, and others ready for any more destructive bursting charge that may hereafter be discovered; whether any such shells are ready in England; and if patterns of such shells have yet been provided by the Admiralty or War Office?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (Lord G. HAMILTON, Middlesex, Ealing)

It is known to what extent Continental nations have carried out experiments with shells of large capacity charged with high explosives. Experiments with such shells are in progress in this country. It would be undesirable that I should give any further information on the subject.
