HC Deb 27 May 1889 vol 336 c1220

Order read for resuming Adjourned Debate on Question [22nd May], "That the Bill be committed to a Select Committee."

Question again proposed.

Debate resumed.

* SIR J. PEASE (Durham, Barnard Castle)

I beg to move that this Bill be referred to a Select Committee of this House. I do so in consequence of the pledge I gave to this House.

An hon. MEMBER objected.

* MR. W. H. SMITH

I wish to appeal to my hon. Friend to allow this Bill to go to Committee, in order that the question may be examined judicially. After that has been done it will be in the power of my hon. Friends to raise any objection when the matter again comes before the House. I understand the hon. Baronet will embody in the reference the instructions which I suggested last Wednesday.

* SIR J. PEASE

Certainly, Sir; I shall lay the instruction on the Table of the House, so that hon. Members may have plenty of opportunity of examining it.

* MR. BARTLEY (Islington)

I will not oppose this on the distinct understanding that an arrangement will be carried out for renewing the Coal Dues until certain debts have been paid off.

Question put and agreed to.

Bill committed to a Select Committee.
