HC Deb 09 May 1889 vol 335 c1548
DR. CAMERON (Glasgow, College)

asked the Secretary of State for War, whether it is true that under the Army Orders issued 1st of April, containing le new regulations for admission to Sandhurst and Woolwich, after the end of next year. Latin has been one of the two compulsory languages in which a 3andidate is required to pass, and that the second language, French or German, has, as regards marks, been placed on a level with Greek: And whether the former value given to a colloquial knowledge of French or German has been reduced from 600 to 400 marks?

*MR. E. STANHOPE

Under the new regulations candidates for admission to Sandhurst and Woolwich will be required to pass in mathematics, Latin, and either French or German. All languages have been marked at the same value, because when an optional subject is marked with less marks than another it is found that it practically drops out of the course at schools. The proportional value given to a colloquial knowledge of French or German remains the same as before—namely, one-fifth of the marks alloted to the subject.
