HC Deb 07 May 1889 vol 335 cc1359-60
M. BROOKFIELD (Sussex, Rye)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he could state the actual amount of "confectionery" properly so-called, which was annually exported from Great Britain and Ireland, to foreign countries and to British Possessions, severally.

*THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Sir M. HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.

I am not able to state the actual amount of confectionery—properly so-called—which is annually exported, because the exports of confectionery are entered under the same heading as those of pickles, vinegar, sauces, and condiments. The total value of the above exports for the year 1887, which is the last for which separate figures can be given, amounted to £1,193,727, of which £443,000 went to foreign countries, and £751,000 to British Possessions. Probably not more than one-fourth of the amount is for confectionery, properly so-called.
