HC Deb 06 May 1889 vol 335 c1251
MR. DE COBAIN (Belfast, E.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if his attention has been drawn to the serious neglect of the Chief Sanitary Authority of the city of Belfast, which had for years permitted the receptacle for the night soil and filth of the entire population to remain in the centre of the Cromas Ward, and in close proximity to the dwellings of a rapidly increasing population; whether he has seen that this condition of things has been condemned. by the report recently issued by the Chief Medical Officer of the Sanitary Department of Belfast, while the only remedial measure adopted up to the present has been to whitewash the manure heap, that they might be concealed from public observation to some extent; and whether, as this nuisance is closely contiguous to the new bridge to be opened by his Royal Highness Prince Albert Victor during his visit to Belfast, he would request the Local Government Board to call upon the Corporation of Belfast to take immediate steps to remove this nuisance?

*MR. MADDEN

The Local Government Inspector stationed in Belfast reports that the contents of the manure depot referred to consist nearly altogether of street and road scrapings. The Corporation of Belfast has made repeated efforts to obtain a site for a depot outside the city, but so far without success. Last month the whole subject was under consideration of the Town Council, and in accordance with a report obtained from the Medical Superintendent Officer of Health, steps are being taken to have the contents speedily removed, and to secure that until a suitable place be secured outside the city the contents of the present place be kept as low as possible. The place is also being disinfected with lime.
