HC Deb 06 May 1889 vol 335 c1246
MR. JOHN ELLIS (Notts.,) Rushcliffe

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether he will arrange for the "Adjourned Debate on Report of Supply [29th April]," on to-day's Orders of the Day, to be taken at a reasonable hour before midnight?

*Mr. W. H. SMITH

I will take care that the Report of Supply to which the hon. Gentleman refers, shall be taken at a reasonable hour.

MR. E. ROBERTSON (Dundee)

The right hon. Gentleman gave a conditional promise that he would give us an opportunity for a discussion on the Report of Supply with reference to the absence of our Ambassador from Paris at the time of the opening of the Exhibition.

*MR. W. H. SMITH

I did enter into such an engagement, but I think the hon. Member will own it was impossible for us to report progress on Friday morning as the Vote was not obtained till the last moment. I will endeavour, as far as I can, to meet the views of the hon. Gentlemen, but I think it must be admitted that some sacrifice must be made by hon. Gentlemen, looking to the condition of financial business.

SIR W. HARCOURT (Derby)

I am very anxious that progress should be made with Supply, but there is a question arising upon the Foreign Office Vote, upon which it is desired to have a short discussion, and if it be inconvenient to bring it on at a late hour tonight, I would ask the right hon. Gentleman to consider whether he could not take all the rest of the Votes on Report of Supply, and allow this matter to be discussed possibly tomorrow morning.

*MR. W. H. SMITH

I will postpone the Foreign Office Vote this evening, at all events.
