HC Deb 02 May 1889 vol 335 cc971-2
MR. BLUNDELL MAPLE (Camberwell, Dulwich)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies if it is his intention to introduce a Bill prohibiting the importation of confectionery and sweetened provisions made from bounty-fed sugar?

*THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Baron H. de WORMS, Liverpool, Toxeth)

No, Sir.

MR. KNATCHBULL HUGESSEN (Kent, Faversham)

Is it intended to prohibit the importation into this country of jams made from bounty-fed sugar?

BARON H. DE WORMS

No, Sir.

MR. BRADLAUGH (Northampton)

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the introduction of the Bill has been attended by a rise in the price of the sugar of the poor all over the country?

BARON H. DE WORMS

I am not aware of that fact. I am aware that a rise in the price of sugar has taken place, but it is owing to the existence of the unfortunate Bounty System.

MR. H. FOWLER (Wolverhampton, E.)

Will not the Bill prohibit the importation of confectionery and sweetened provision made from bounty-fed sugar?

BARON H. DE WORMS

Certainly not.
