HC Deb 28 March 1889 vol 334 c1008
MR. MONTAGU (Tower Hamlets, Whitechapel)

asked the Secretary of State for War, whether, at the last election at Enfield, the workmen employed at the Small Arms Factory had a half-holiday for the purpose of voting; whether they were compensated for the loss of time; and, if so, by whom were they paid, and from what fund?

*THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (Mr. E. STANHOPE,) Lincolnshire, Horncastle

The last Parliamentary Election took place on a Tuesday, and the workmen at the Small Arms Factory had a half-holiday, for which no stoppage of wages took place. At the election of the County Council special facilities were afforded to the workmen for recording their votes. They had leave, with pay, for two hours.
