HC Deb 25 March 1889 vol 334 cc727-8
MR. BROADHURST (Nottingham, W.)

asked the First Lord of the Treasury whether, seeing the large amount of interest on both sides of the House taken in the Motion which has the first place on 2nd April, he can give an assurance that the Government will not move the suspension of the Standing Orders on that date?

*MR. W. H. SMITH

I am not at present aware of any necessity for asking the House to suspend the Standing Orders on Tuesday, the 2nd of April, and I have personally the strongest wish that the Motion of the hon. Gentleman (referring to the condition of the poor in large towns) shall be discussed; but he will see that it is impossible for me to come under any positive engagement which would tie my hands against any conceivable emergency.
