HC Deb 22 March 1889 vol 334 c540
MR. JOHN O'CONNOR (Tipperary, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary whether his attention has been called to the fact that the foreman printer of the Tipperary Nationalist, who was severely bludgeoned by the police, and whose head is still bandaged and un-healed, was summoned on Wednesday, 13th instant, for taking part in a riot and unlawful assembly; whether he is aware that at a previous Petty Sessions in Clonmel a policeman was fined a guinea for assaulting the printer on the same occasion; and whether, under the circumstances, he will direct the prosecution of the printer to be withdrawn?

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

AS regards the circumstances of the riot and unlawfal assembly out of which the charges in question arose, I would beg to refer the hon. Member to the reply given to a question put on 8th March by the hon. Member for Tipperary East. The charge against the printer will, by consent, not be heard until after the hearing of the appeal lodged by the constable against the Magistrates' decision.
