JAMES ROWLANDSasked the Postmaster General whether it is a fact that the estimate for overtime in the Savings Bank Department for 1888 was very much exceeded; whether, although upwards of 300 clerks have been and are now working for 12 hours each day, the work is at the present time much in arrears as compared with last year; and what steps he proposes to take in order to remedy this continual arrears of work in that Department?
§ *MR. RAIKESThe Estimate for extra duty for the year 1888–9, viz., £8,500, will be considerably exceeded when the year closes on the 31st instant. The annual account to the 31st December, 1888, has to be rendered to Parliament before the 30th April next. This account is not in arrear, and will be presented within the proper date. The question of meeting the rapid growth of business of the Savings Bank is engaging the attention of the Government.
