HC Deb 14 March 1889 vol 333 c1668
LORD CHARLES BERESFORD (Marylebone)

I wish to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty for the latest news with regard to H.M.S Sultan?

* LORD G. HAMILTON

I received a telegram last night from the Commander-in-Chief as follows:— Work on Sultan has been delayed by breaking down of pumps and heavy swell. Hope, however, to make an attempt to float ship to-morrow morning. This morning I received a further telegram— Heavy north-east gale. High sea forced Sultan off the rook. Sank 11.45. Upper works visible above water. No loss of life. Ships returning into harbour. I have directed the Commander-in-Chief to ascertain the extent and position of the damage, and then, if practicable, we hope to raise her.

COLONEL NOLAN (Galway)

Is the Sultan the ship in connection with which a Supplementary Estimate of £45,000 was issued this morning?

* LORD GEORGE HAMILTON

Yes.
