HC Deb 24 June 1889 vol 337 c559
MR. WATT (Glasgow, Camlachie)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies whether it is a fact that the garrison which has been maintained at Trinidad since the British occupation has been ordered to proceed to Barba-does; whether there is a garrison resident at Demerara; and whether, in view of recent disturbances there, and in a neighbouring country, with whom disputes are now pending and diplomatic relations suspended, Her Majesty's Government will re-consider their determination to remove to a considerable distance the only available force for the protection of British subjects and their property?

BARON H. DE WORMS

The transfer to Barbadoes of the one company of Infantry which had been stationed in Trinidad is a part of the arrangements considered most expedient for the defence of the West Indian Colonies generally. A small force is at present stationed in British Guiana, and Her Majesty's Government do not think it necessary at the present time to retain any troops in Trinidad.
