HC Deb 21 June 1889 vol 337 cc404-5
MR. JOHNSTON (Belfast, S.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the French Government have awarded any compensation to the Rev. John Jones, of the London Missionary Society, late of Maré, one of the Loyalty Islands, for the loss of his property in that island consequent upon his expulsion by the French Authorities?

* THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON,) Manchester, N.E.

The French Government have not undertaken to make any compensation for his expulsion or its consequences. They undertook to make inquiry as to the alleged appropriation of property belonging to the London Missionary Society or to Mr. Jones.
