HC Deb 26 July 1889 vol 338 cc1433-4
MR. AGG-GAEDNER (Cheltenham)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Government will make inquiries into the prevalence of bogus clubs, the premises of which are largely used for the sale and consumption of intoxicating liquors without licence, with a view to introducing a measure to provide for their registration or suppression?

* MR. GOSCHEN

The question of the hon. Member raises an important subject. There is, no doubt, some evasion of licence duty by means of clubs, the premises of which are used for the sale and consumption of intoxicating liquors without licence. I have already given my attention to this subject, but without, so far, discovering any practicable means of striking at bogus clubs in the manner indicated; I will consider the matter further during the Recess.
