§ DR. CAMERON (Glasgow, College)I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been called to a telegram in the New York Herald, dated Zanzibar, 9th July, to the effect that the effect at Mombassa of the bombardment of Pangani by the German gunboat Pfeil, was such that the British ship, Turquoise, stationed there had her crew under arms day and night; and whether the bombardment of Pangani formed any portion of the combined naval operations in which the British and German fleets are engaged on the East Coast of Africa; and, if so, whether he can explain the reason for the bombardment?
§ * THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir J. FERGUSSON,) Manchester, N.E.The German bombardment of Pangani was in no way connected with the combined naval operations. Its object was the re-establishment of German authority, and the English Forces have had nothing to do with it. We have no ground whatever for believing that there has been any disturbance at Mombassa in the British region.
