HC Deb 08 July 1889 vol 337 c1693
MR. LYELL (Orkney and Shetland)

I beg to ask the Postmaster General whether he has considered the desirability of extending the telegraphic communication to Pierowall, Westray, in the County of Orkney; and, if so, can he say when this much desired improvement will be carried out?

* MR. RAIKES

The question of extending the telegraph to the Island of Westray has more than once been brought before me; but as it is estimated that the receipts would not equal the expenses, I am precluded by Treasury Regulations from making the extension unless a guarantee be given to secure the Post Office against loss.
