HC Deb 23 August 1889 vol 340 cc237-8
Mr. BYRNE (Wicklow, W.)

I beg to ask the Solicitor General for Ireland whether his attention has been directed to the Report of the meeting of the Board of Guardians at Rathdrum, County Wicklow, on Wednesday, the 14th inst, when it was stated that the number of inmates was 202; that the salaries of the officials amounted to the sum of £1,691 per annum; and whether he will urge the Local Government Board to insist on a reduction of the staff and expenditure at this Union?

MR. MADDEN

The Report referred to has not come before the Local Government Board. The Official Minutes show that the Guardians discussed the question of salaries on the 14th inst., but nothing further was done. There are about 208 paupers in the workhouse, and the salaries of the workhouse officers (without taking into account the salaries of extern officers) amount to about £540 per annum. The Local Government Board see no reason to adopt the course suggested in the last paragraph.
