HC Deb 06 August 1889 vol 339 cc536-7
MR. STAVELEY HILL (Staffordshire, Kingswinford)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether a Correspondence has taken place between a British Company called the Venezuela Panama Gold Mine Company, Limited, and the Government, with reference to the confiscation by the late President of Venezuela, Don Guzman Blanco, of their property in the Yuruari territory, now administered by Venezuela; and whether he has any objection to lay the Correspondence upon the Table of the House?

* THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir J. FERGUSSON, Manchester, N.E.)

Her Majesty's Government have been appealed to by the company on account of the cancelling of their concession, and an adverse judgment of the Venezuelan Courts; but they have not considered that a sufficient case is made out for their intervention. The matter is not one of such public importance as to justify the presentation of the Correspondence.

MR. S. HILL

Will the right hon. Gentleman allow me to see the correspondence?

* SIR J. FERGUSSON

Yes; I think there will be no objection.
