CAMERON (Glasgow, College)asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he had any information as to the truth of a Reuter's telegram from Lisbon, which asserted that, as the result of Lieutenant Cardosa's mission, nine Native chiefs on the banks of Lake Nyassa had placed themselves under Portuguese protection; and, if it be true, whether the Government had taken steps to protest against the extension of the Portuguese sphere of influence towards the centre of Africa over regions discovered and opened up by British enterprize?

BUCHANAN (Edinburgh, W.)also asked whether it is a fact that Lieutenant Cardosa's expedition had returned to Quilimane from Lake Nyassa; whether it was a fact, as officially announced in Lisbon, that nine native chiefs on the shores of Lake Nyassa had placed themselves under Portuguese rule; and whether Her Majesty's Government would continue to decline to recognize any such assumption of territorial sovereignty by Portugal beyond the Ruo River or in the region of Lake Nyassa?
