HC Deb 12 April 1889 vol 335 c360
MR. HALLEY STEWART (Lincolnshire, Spalding)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Bengollyn left the port of Liverpool on Wednesday the 20th March, encountering a furious gale the same evening; that on the day of sailing the barometer marked the very low reading of 29.02, and that it had been steadily falling for five consecutive days; that the warning north cone signal was hoisted at the port of Liverpool; whether anything has since been heard of the Bengollyn except that wreckage of the ship, including some seamen's chests, has drifted ashore on the coast of North Wales; and whether it is possible to frame any regulations, appealing to which captains will be able more readily to resist an owner's undue pressure to put a vessel to sea in the teeth of manifest peril to his own life and that of his crew?

*THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Sir M. HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.

Inquiry has been ordered, and when the report which will deal with the points raised in the hon. Member's question has been received I shall be happy to forward it to him.
