HC Deb 12 April 1889 vol 335 c370
MR. JAMES (Gateshead)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury, whether, in accordance with the undertaking given by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in Committee on the Local Government (England and Wales) Bill, it is the intention of the Government to submit any measure during the present Session upon the subject of local rating, taking into consideration how the rates may be adjusted between owners and occupiers?

*MR. W. H. SMITH

The question would seem to imply that the Chancellor of the Exchequer had undertaken that the Government would deal with the subject of rating this Session. No such undertaking was given. What the Chancellor of the Exchequer said was that the whole question of rating would be considered by the Government. I am afraid, however, there is no probability of the subject being dealt with this Session.
