MACLEAN(for Mr. MACLURE) (Lancashire, S.E., Stretford)asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether he can give an estimate of the amount which would be produced by the Van and Wheel Tax in England, and also state how much will be received by the various county boroughs, and how much by each of the separate counties independently of the county boroughs?
§ THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. GOSCHEN) (St. George's, Hanover Square)The estimate of the produce of the Van Tax, after the ex eruptions which have been made, is 147 £180,000 a-year for England and Wales. I cannot give the exact distribution, but without pledging myself to an exact estimate the figures may be given approximately as follows:—London, £37,400; the county boroughs, £60,000; the counties in England and Wales, £82,600.
