HC Deb 19 November 1888 vol 330 c1502
LORD RANDOLPH CHURCHILL (Paddington, S.)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether the attention of the Public Prosecutor is being directed to the Report of the Royal Commission on the Metropolitan Board of Works, with a view to taking criminal proceedings against certain parties mentioned in that Report?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

The Report of the Royal Commission was, in the month of August last, submitted through the Treasury Solicitor to the Law Officers of the Crown, with a view to taking criminal proceedings against the person who was most seriously affected by the Report, and who was not protected by any indemnity. The Law Officers, however, have advised that, in the existing state of the law, there is not sufficient evidence to justify a prosecution.
