HC Deb 09 November 1888 vol 330 c774
DR. CAMERON (Glasgow, College)

asked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether it is proposed to bring forward the Vote for crofter emigration for discussion during the present Session; and, whether there is any foundation for the statement in yesterday's Scotsman that Government intend this Session to propose the appointment of a Select Committee of this House to consider the subject of crofter emigration?

THE FIRST LORD (Mr. W. H. SMITH) (Strand, Westminster)

It is intended to propose a Vote for crofter emigration in the course of the present Session. Expense has been incurred, emigration has gone on, and therefore it is only right that the House of Commons should have an opportunity of discussing the course the Government has taken. But it is also proposed that a Committee should sit; and I think that will probably be a better way of arriving at all the facts of the case than a prolonged discussion on the Vote in this House.
