HC Deb 10 May 1888 vol 325 c1825
MR. CHILDERS (Edinburgh, S.)

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether he has yet matured a plan for levying a less rate of duty on bottled wine of low value; and, when the proposal will be brought before the House?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. GOSCHEN) (St. George's, Hanover Square)

I can assure the right hon. Gentleman that I am as anxious as he is to bring this matter to a termination; but he must be aware that it is necessary to make very considerable inquiry as to the value of various kinds of wines, and the proper line to be taken in regard to the mode of fixing the duty, and it would be unwise to come to a decision without having the fullest information on the point. I hope, however to introduce the Bill before Whitsuntide.
