HC Deb 22 March 1888 vol 324 cc25-6
Mr. T. W. RUSSELL (Tyrone, S.)

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, When a Sub Commission Court sat under the Land Act in Monaghan; whether he is aware that a large number of tenants served originating notices before November last, and that, although entitled to a reduced rent if decreed by the Court, they are being called upon to pay the full year's rent; and, if he will take steps to expedite the settlement of these cases?

MR. P. O'BRIEN (Monaghan, N.)

also asked, when the Land Sub-Commission will sit in Clones, County Monaghan?

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER SECRETARY (Colonel KING-HARMAN) (Kent, Isle of Thanet)

(who replied) said: The Land Commissioners inform me that a Sub-Commission sat in the County Monaghan during the months of October, November, and December last. No date has yet been fixed for the next sitting. It appears that on one estate in the county a number of tenants served originating notices before November last, and have been called upon to pay the full year's rent; but that, pending the decision of the Court, 20 per cent reduction is allowed to those who pay their rents within a specified time. As I stated in the House the day before yesterday, the Government are anxiously considering the question of the existing arrears in applications awaiting a hearing.
