HC Deb 22 March 1888 vol 324 c32
MR. BRADLAUGH (Northampton)

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether he will consent to a Return showing the amounts paid during the past three years by the Government of India to the Irrawaddy Flotilla; and, in what respect, under what conditions, and for what services, such moneys have been paid?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JOHN GORST) (Chatham)

The Secretary of State will consult the Government of India as to the expediency of having such a Return prepared. It would take some time, as the information would have to be procured from Burmah. The moneys are paid under contract with the Company for the conveyance of mails, troops, stores, prisoners, police, &c.

MR. BRADLAUGH

inquired, whether the hon. Gentleman was aware that great dissatisfaction was expressed in Burmah and India as to the amounts received by the Company?

SIR JOHN GORST

No; I cannot admit that fact.
