HC Deb 31 July 1888 vol 329 cc957-8
MR. BROADHURST (Nottingham, W.)

asked the President of the Board of Trade, Whether it is true that two deaths have recently occurred in Great Yarmouth Hospital through injuries received by the explosion of a boiler on board a trawler in the North Sea; and, if so, whether he can say whether or not the engineer held a Board of Trade certificate of competency; and, whether a full inquiry into the cause of the accident, and a Report thereon, will be ordered by the Board of Trade?

THE PRESIDENT (Sir MICHAEL HICKS-BEACH) (Bristol, W.)

Yes, Sir, it is true that the deaths referred to by the hon. Member have occurred. There was no engineer on board, as the vessel in question is a sailing vessel, which was not required by law to carry a certificated engineer. Inquiry has been ordered under the Boiler Explosions Act.
