HC Deb 09 July 1888 vol 328 c711
MR. J. S. GATHORNE-HARDY (Kent, Medway)

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether it is true that British subject in Java are compelled to serve in the Auxiliary Militia there; and, if so, whether Her Majesty's Government will take steps to remedy the grievance?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON) (Manchester, N.E.)

I have fully explained this matter in reply to the hon. Member for Stirlingshire (Mr. J. C. Bolton) on the 3rd instant. There is no Treaty between Her Majesty and the Netherlands by which British subjects would be exempted from service in the Militia it Dutch Colonies.
