MR. MACDONALD CAMERON (Wick, &c.)asked the Secretary to the Treasury, Whether it is true that the vacancy in the Statistical Department of the Customs, caused by the recent death of a principal clerk, is not to be filled up, pending the re-organization of the Office; and, whether such re-organization is likely to be effected shortly, or is indefinitely postponed to be dealt with by the Royal Commission; and, if so whether promotions to Staff appointments, and to the Upper Division, is for the present entirely suspended throughout the Civil Service?
§ SIR HERBERT MAXWELL (a LORD of the TREASURY) (Wigton)(who replied) said, that the re-organization of the Customs cannot be said to be indefinitely postponed, but we wish to receive the Report of the Royal Commission before proceeding with it.
