HC Deb 18 December 1888 vol 332 cc648-9
MR. JAMES STUART (Shoreditch, Hoxton)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether he has received a Memorial from "General" Booth, of the Salvation Army, respecting the establishment of cheap shelters for the outcast poor in London; and, what reply he has given to that Memorial?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

I have received the Memorial in question from "General" Booth; and I have directed a reply to be sent that the Government cannot assist a charitable work conducted by private persons with grants of money, buildings, or stores.
