HC Deb 03 December 1888 vol 331 cc838-9
MR. PICTON (Leicester)

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, If he can now say whether any despatch or communication of any kind has been received by the Government from the Governor of Lagos containing any complaint concerning the conduct of the employés of the Royal Niger Company toward the Natives; and, whether it can be laid upon the Table of the House?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON)said (Manchester, N.E.)

The Governor of Lagos does not report to the Foreign Office. He has no personal knowledge of the relations between the natives of the Niger territories and the employés of the Company, and has made no Report on the subject to the Colonial Office. It may be added that no complaints on the part of the natives have lately reached us from any quarter.
