HC Deb 23 April 1888 vol 325 cc186-7
MR. EDWARD HARRINGTON (Kerry, W.)

I wish to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland a Question about Resident Magistrates in County Kerry. I want to know who selects them to try cases under the Criminal Law and Procedure (Ireland) Act; if it is the Lord Lieutenant; and how it has happened that within the last fortnight magistrates have gone twice to places to try cases under this new Act, and only then and there, after going 40 or 50 miles, discovered that neither of them had sufficiency of legal knowledge which would satisfy the Lord Lieutenant?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR) (Manchester, E.)

If the hon. Gentleman would give Notice of the Question, I should be able to ascertain the facts.
