HC Deb 20 April 1888 vol 325 cc18-9
MR. FLYNN (Cork, N.)

asked the President of the Local Government Board, If he is aware how many cases of small pox have broken out amongst the members of The Pointsman Theatrical Company at present playing at Newcastle-on-Tyne, but who were playing at Sheffield three weeks ago; and, if any precautions were taken in regard to the theatre in Sheffield remaining open during the epidemic?

THE PRESIDENT (Mr. RITCHIE) (Tower Hamlets, St. George's)

I am informed that one only of the members of The Pointsman Company at Newcastle has been attacked with illness. He is now recovering, and the disease is believed not to have been small pox. As to the second part of the Question, precautions were taken with regard to the theatres in Sheffield during the epidemic; but neither the Sanitary Authority nor the Local Government Board have any power as regards the closing of the theatres.
