HC Deb 20 April 1888 vol 325 c9
MR. BRADLAUGH (Northampton)

asked the President of the Local Government Board, Whether his attention has been called to alleged cases of inhumanity and neglect by the relieving officer at Northampton; and, whether he will order an official inquiry?

THE PRESIDENT (Mr. RITCHIE) (Tower Hamlets, St. George's)

Previous to the Notice of this Question, my attention had not been drawn to the alleged case of neglect by one of the relieving officers at Northampton. The Guardians have investigated the matter, and have arrived at the conclusion that the conduct of the officer was open to blame, and at the request of the Guardians he has been cautioned by the Chairman. It may be desirable, however, that the facts of the case should be investigated on oath; and I have directed an official inquiry accordingly.
