HC Deb 20 April 1888 vol 325 c24
MR. LEA (Londonderry, S.)

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, If the Royal Dublin Society has applied for the continuance of the grant of —5,000 towards improving the breed of horses and cattle in Ireland; and, if so, whether the Government accede to the request?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR) (Manchester, E.)

I am of opinion that it would be highly desirable to continue the grant of £5,000 which was given last year, and which, I believe, has produced very excellent results. Of course, any such grant of £5,000 must be out of the sum allocated by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in relief of local burdens in Ireland; or else it must be taken in part out of the sum at present allocated to Queen's Plates. But I think the sum ought to be continued.
