HC Deb 28 March 1887 vol 312 c1610
MAJOR RASCH (Essex, S.E.)

asked the Secretary of State for the Homo Department, Whether his attention has been called to the article in The Essex Weekly News of 17th March with reference to the alleged ill-treatment of convicts; and, whether he will cause an inquiry to be made into the matter?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

, in reply, said, he had obtained a Report from the Governor of the prison at which the convicts were alleged to have been ill-treated, and he was informed that the prisoners had greatcoats, and that the medical officer stated that they had not received any injury from their journey, although the weather was very inclement. He, however, intended to make further inquiry into the subject.
